Health and Social Care
Curriculum intent
In the UK, our publicly funded health and social care system is both a cause of national pride and our largest employer. The Health and Social Care curriculum is designed to allow students to explore the skills and knowledge needed of work in a range of roles but also the ethos behind the desire to provide free health care for all.
It is our intent to provide students with powerful knowledge on human development, factors
which impact on development and the services and professionals who support people with their health and wellbeing. Students will develop the academic skills of application, analysis, evaluation and research. They will also study the key care values and personal attributes required by health and social care practitioners, many of which link directly with Grace Academy’s own core values. Through theory and application to case studies the students analyse the impact of anti-discrimination policies within the sector along with how religious, cultural and personal beliefs can impact on care provided and accessibility to services.
This is a vocational course, which means theory is always applied to a selection of case studies, providing a variety of clinical and moral questions for students to consider and work through. Retrieval practice is built into the curriculum to enable us to link new learning with existing theory to prepare for the examined units and also ensure the synoptic coursework evidences the highest marks possible.
The course will inspire students to strive to achieve their potential and gain positions within the health and social care system where they can make a positive difference in our society.

In January 2025 you will be completing your first PSA (coursework). For Task 1 and 2 in this coursework you need to discuss the growth and development expected in particular life stages and explain how factors can affect development either positively or negatively. |

Year 11 |
Revising the different types of health and social care services and barriers to accessing them. Revising the skills, attributes and values required to give care. |
This half term you will be completing your second PSA (coursework). In the PSA you will need to demonstrate an understanding of health and social care services and the skills, attributes and values that are common across the sector. The PSA has 5 tasks based around different case studies. |

Year 12 |
Human growth and development through the life stages. Factors affecting human growth and development.
|
On January 10th 2025 you will be sitting your Unit 1 exam. In the exam you will be assessed through a number of short and long answer questions, based on case studies. You will need to be able to describe growth and development, analyse relevant theories and interpret data. |

Year 13 |
The roles and responsibilities of people who work in the health and social care sector. The roles of organisations in the health and social care sector.

On January 13th 2025 you will be sitting your Unit 2 exam. The paper consists of four sections, and each section is based on a different short scenario briefly explaining the situation of a person with health and social care needs. You will need to explain the roles and responsibilities of the professionals who will be involved in their care. |
