Art

Curriculum Intent

In Art, our curriculum intent is to promote creativity, which in turn directly enhances learning by increasing motivation, deepening understanding and promoting wellbeing. Students will become knowledgeable of a range of artists and make judgments about their work in informed and reasoned ways, increasing their knowledge of how to effectively evaluate others’ work in order to develop their own. They will apply this research and experiment with techniques employed by artists from a range of eras, which will support them developing their own style and improve their ability to handle materials.

From Year 7, our curriculum requires students to learn three different genres of art each year including Pop Art, Mixed Media, African Art and Observational Drawings. This allows students to learn a range of techniques, styles and artists which acts as a basis for preparing students for GCSE. This way of teaching allows students to become independent in a range of different media and allows them to make informed decisions about which media and styles they work best with and how to best refine these media independently. Students will make informed choices about which style, techniques and media they enjoy most, promoting a love of learning and opportunity to progress independently.

As well as developing creativity and ideas, students will learn to refine their designs and increase their execution. They will also have the opportunity to experiment with a range of media including acrylic paint, tonal pencil, mixed media and relief work, which in turn will allow them to invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
