Transition Summer School 26th – 30th July 2021
We are delighted to be able to provide the exciting opportunity for your child to participate in Grace Academy’s summer school, which will run from 8.30am-3pm Monday 26th July – Friday 30th July inclusive.
The aim of the summer school is for students to be able to form relationships with peers and key members of staff ahead of their start at Grace Academy, as well as providing a mixture of fun enrichment activities and academic support. If you would like to register your child for the summer school, please complete the online consent form by Friday 18th June. The form can be found at the following link https://forms.gle/hXfwWKRVdHrvHmEu9
Throughout the week, students will participate in:
- Rocket Making and Parachutes (Science)
- Cryptology and code-breaking (Maths)
- A workshop with our PCSOs where they will meet a police sniffer dog, and see how the police use drones
- A spoken word workshop
- Workshops on confidence and mental health, led by our PSHE team
As an academy, one of our priorities is fostering a love of reading and, as such, students will be given a free copy of The Crossover by Kwame Alexander and there will be literacy activities throughout the week to encourage students to explore the text.
Break and Lunch
Students will be provided with lunch daily, and there will be three breaks throughout the day to ensure that students have a chance to socialise. We recognise that beginning secondary school can be a daunting time and so this is a fantastic opportunity for your child to begin to form friendships ahead of September.
We take our commitment to Safeguarding very seriously. Students will be supervised by members of Grace Academy staff at all times when they are on site, including break times and lunchtime. Members of staff on duty will wear high-visibility vests, so that if your child needs anything, an adult will be easily identifiable. In addition, there will be a Safeguarding Lead and a member of the Academy Senior Leadership Team on site every day.
Risk Assessments will be completed for all activities, including those involving external agencies. In addition, we are following government guidelines regarding Covid-19 and this will be taken into consideration when conducting risk assessments and grouping students. We will update parents with information regarding preventing the spread of Covid-19 towards the end of the Summer Term.
Attendance will be monitored and staff will conduct registers both iun the morning and after lunch, as per our normal school day.
Students will receive a passport for the week, which will be stamped by their team leader.
- A star stamp will be given for excellent effort and contribution to an activity
- A subject stamp will be given for a good effort and contribution to an activity
- A ‘You Can Do Better’ stamp will be given if there is a need to remind students to engage with activities and conduct themselves in line with our Academy’s expectations.
Note: If a student receives a ‘You Can Do Better’ and continues to fall short of our academy expectations regarding behaviour, parents will be asked to collect their child from site.
There will be a first-aider available on site every day throughout the duration of the Summer School.
If your child has medical needs or medication that will need to be administered during the day, please ensure that you have completed and returned the appropriate forms from your transition pack.
If you have any questions regarding the Summer School, please do not hesitate to contact us and speak to either Mrs Alexandra Cooper (Assistant Principal leading transition) or Mrs Emily Williams (Ethos Lead).
